Celebrating a love of books at Seasons

And how did World Book Day become World Dress Up Day...?

At Seasons, we love books, from our tiny picture board books, to our classics. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry and prose. Books that celebrate difference, books about historical figures and trips to the moon. Guides to creatures past and present, atlases and manuals. Our books are all easily accessible and whilst we care for them and handle with respect, they are free to move around the site, to the woods and to the garden. Many of our books are nature based and the messages those of respect and sustainability. We keep commercial and screen-based messages out, so you won't find TV characters or Disney titles. All our books send a broad and consistent message.

Books share knowledge and information.

Books spark wonder and imagination

but most importantly, particularly in the Early Years,

Books bring us together.

So, on World Book day at Seasons (Thursday 7th March), we reflect these three things in our celebrations. We learn something new as our wonderful team here shares a new fact each day from a non-fiction book, this year we are exploring a huge Atlas of the World which includes flags, countries, rivers, mountains, seas and BIG numbers.

In the afternoons we will read our new story, chosen to spark curiosity and wonder. Written by local author Julia Donaldson, this book explores SO much. Whilst it doesn't have the same pace and rhythm that many of her stories too, concepts of time, life cycles and respect for living things are explored with beautiful prose. The big, bold concepts allow the book to be read again and again and last through the years as our children too grow. For me it's the illustrations which draw children in, such as the accuracy of a sprouting acorn which all our children at Seasons can relate to.

Finally, we will be holding a book exchange in the cabin where families are encouraged to donate books from home to swap at our very own book shop.

And no, we won't be dressing up. We prefer to wear practical, adventurous clothes that keep us warm and dry and keep our focus on the stories, the wonder, and the sharing togetherness of a good book.

Ten of our favourite children's books...

Press Here by Herve Tullet

A simple and interactive classic picture book that always keeps little minds engaged and will always be read many times on a row!

On a Beam Of Light by Jennifer Berne

This wonderful story is not only an interesting look at the life of Albert Einstein but also a study of difference and acceptance as Einstein's quirks and eccentricities are celebrated in the light of his incredible mind.

Billy's Beetle by Mick Inkpen

Another classic tale that keeps little ones interested as they search for the little beetle on each page.

The Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook by Shirley Hughes

All the Alfie stories are wonderful but this is a nostalgic and comforting walk through a rural childhood through the lens of a 4 year old. Poetry, short stories and of course iconic illustrations.

On the Origin of Species by Sabina Radeva

A beautifully illustrated guide to the theory of evolution and how all species are related and connected. Huge concepts explained simply and carefully and a book to find a place on any child's bookshelf for many years to come.

Fortunately by Remy Charlip

This classic tale of optimism is short and appealing to even very young children. Fortunately is a comforting read even on the most difficult days.

Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

With its wonderful, quirky and understated humour, Stuck is a lovely heartwarming read for all ages.

Circle by Jeannie Baker

This book is a slow burn but it's story is uplifting and a poignant look at disability.

A Poem for Every Night of the Year

A compilation of poetry to indroduce children and adults to a lifelong love of poetry

Usborne lift the flap Bugs and Butterflies

Just one of the many wonderful books in this series. The flaps keep little fingers busy and little minds engaged by the high quality writing and information.

Happy World Book Day everyone!
